Third guess CHINE was very helpful! It revealed that H is in the 2nd position. Now I knew the pattern was _HI_E.

Fourth guess SHITE sealed the deal! It correctly placed H in position 2 and T in position 4, confirming the pattern _HITE. With this information, WHITE was the obvious final answer!
