From ALIKE I learned that all five letters (A, L, I, K, E) are absent! Second guess SHOUT revealed that O is correct in position 3! S, H, U, and T were all absent. Now I had the pattern __O__.

Third guess PROXY was a brilliant strategic choice! It confirmed that P, R, and O are all correct in positions 1, 2, and 3 respectively! X and Y were both absent. Now I had the pattern PRO__ with the first three letters locked in!

Fourth guess PROMO was designed to test what comes after PRO. It confirmed that P, R, and O remain correct in their positions, M is absent, and the second O is present but not in position 5. This meant the pattern was PROO_ with only one letter to determine!
