Fifth guess WAVES was a breakthrough! W, A, and E are correct in positions 1, 2, and 4! Since N is present but not in position 3, it must be in position 5. So the pattern is WA_EN with just one letter to figure out!

Answer found in 6 guesses! WAXEN describes something made of or resembling wax - like 'waxen skin' or 'waxen features'! The key insight was using ALIKE, MANDY, CUBED, RIGHT, and WAVES to systematically identify all five letters (W, A, X, E, N) and their correct positions through elimination!
